Reading time: two minutes.

The topic of wellness runs through the Bible.  For a few weeks, I’ll take a quick look at some of my favorite wellness stories in the Bible.

Leading the way is the story of Jesus healing the paralyzed man who was lowered through the roof in Mark chapter 2.  I’m starting here because this passage brings up a whole lot of themes we talk about here at Grace Place Wellness.

This story comes very early in Mark’s whirlwind account of the Lord’s ministry.  What I especially like is that Jesus shows that He is in charge.  He makes things happen.  He makes wellness happen.

Wellness is a gift from the Lord.  We are weak, but He is strong.  The man was physically unable to get himself into the presence of Jesus, but the Lord can do anything!  And the people were amazed.

I’ve got a couple more…Wellness is a community effort.  This is a story about a group of friends looking out for one of their fellowship in need.  They literally carried his burdens.  We’re better together, we need each other and being alone is a good description of dis-ease.

Keep your eyes on Jesus.  The friends knew where to go.  Jesus was impressed with their faith.  When the crowds blocked their view and their access, they found another way to keep their eyes on Jesus: through the roof!  What do we need?  WHO do we need?  Jesus.

Forgiveness is the ultimate cure.  Jesus led with, “Your sins are forgiven.”  He already knew that what we all need most is His forgiving grace.  The physical healing was evidence that He can heal what’s really wrong with us.

Negativity is not healthy.  Jesus noticed the grumblers and put them in their place.  Faith in God looks to the wonders of God that are good beyond imagination.

Miracles happen.  Never discount the possibility that God in His providential mercy will intervene with a cure that boggles the minds of all the doubters, including medical professionals.  All healing is of God.  Sometimes He chooses to amaze.

Wellbeing happens on many levels.  This story is such a great illustration of the fact that the Lord’s design for us includes wholeness in spirt and soul as well as body.  We all bear brokenness in our lives.  Jesus also brings healing to us all.

Wellness makes Jesus known.  Our stories of how the touch of His grace has changed our lives can be a source of amazement to those we tell.  What’s your testimony of healing and restoration by the grace of God?

Walking is good for you.  Jesus told him to take up his mat and go home, and Mark relates that, “He got up, took up his mat, and walked out in full view of them all” (v. 12).  Take a walk every day.  It’s good for you!
