One Simple Thing That Can Change Your Life (and Your Friends, Too)

August 2, 2017 | Posted by Karina Rovey

We are all searching for remedies to different issues in life. Whether it’s stress from school, problems at work or relationship troubles with family or friends, all of us struggle with a variety of dilemmas and how to face them.

But how many of us have been swallowed by a whale? That’s a big problem, and it’s exactly what Jonah faced in the Bible. In the ultimate time of helplessness, there was only one thing he could do: pray.

In Jonah 2, Jonah says, “In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry” (NIV).

As it turned out, God did listen to Jonah’s cry and commanded the fish to spit Jonah out. How incredible is that? Prayer is that powerful. If you know you can’t fix something, you can find assurance knowing that God can.

And the great thing is that God is available to talk to anyone, at any time. His door is open 24/7, 365 days a year. As long as you make time to talk to Him, He’ll be there to listen. As 1 John 5:14 says, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”

In addition to this, prayer is immensely comforting. Knowing that the Creator of the world, the Creator of you has got your back and is in tune with all of your worries and doubts … this gives you a sense of peace.

So if you know what God can do through prayer in your life, think about what it can do in others’ lives as well.

You can pray for your friends, your parents and even your enemies. You know that one person that just always seems down at school? Pray for them. You don’t need to know what they’re going through or even their name. All you need to know is that God will hear your prayer.

If you can, tell that person you are praying for them. Even if they aren’t a Christian, it’s guaranteed to encourage them. It may even inspire them to start praying for themselves or others as well. In a way, prayer is contagious, continually spreading as God’s people pour their hearts out to Him. And in turn, helping others to join in a conversation with Him as well.

Prayer can truly change your life and the lives of people around you. As a popular Casting Crowns song is titled, “What If His People Prayed?” What mountains could we move?
