How to Make Your Donations Count

November 8, 2017 | Posted by Ashley Davis

With the holiday season approaching, many charities are becoming more active. So my goal for this season, and for the next couple of years, is to continuously help to improve the lives of others by giving what I can as I grow older and more financially stable.

Jesus explains the importance of giving in Matthew 19:21 when he says, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Not only does giving to others help improve their earthly lives, but it helps us to improve our spiritual and heavenly lives.

Unfortunately, donating to others may not achieve this purpose if the proper steps are not taken to ensure that money is going to actually help those in need. Helping others is important, but people need to be aware of the types of organizations they are donating to so their contributions actually impact the lives of people that need help.

Many charities work hard to get money to help people, but other companies work to get money to benefit themselves. Learning how to tell which organizations have which goal in mind can help people to make sure their money is making a difference.

Here are a couple of steps to follow when deciding who to donate to:

  • Do your research. Know what percentage of donations charities keep to run the organization, who they help and how they help those people.
  • Know your community. Many local organizations better understand the needs of the people they are trying to help because they are focused on a group of people near them in a community they are familiar with.
  • Have a cause in mind. When trying to decide which organization to donate to, it is easy to become sidetracked or even overwhelmed because of all the different options. If you have a specific cause in mind, though, it is easier to narrow down the number of organizations to pick from. It also allows the research process to be more productive and effective.

Following these steps should make the process of donating to a charity easier, as well and more beneficial to the community around you. So stay safe by protecting your money while donating this holiday season.

Remember that not only does donating benefit the world around you, but it helps you to grow closer to Christ as well.
