One Simple Truth: God Brings You Joy

Can you pick out an event in your life that caused you to become completely aware of God’s presence in your life? My sister Katy explains that her mission trip to Honduras had this effect on her.

During this trip, a team of people from our church traveled to Honduras and washed children’s feet and provided them shoes. But the trip meant so much more than its surface value to my sister; she explained that it’s not really about the shoes. She said that “it’s more about teaching people to serve other people and help others.”

The act of serving and loving the local people in Honduras meant more to Katy than simply handing out shoes. She built connections with people, spread love and received it as well from the people she met.

One child, in particular, stands out to Katy.

She explains how a little girl came up to her and was so thankful for a simple pair of shoes. This girl played with Katy and took pictures with her. When it was time for Katy to leave, the little girl said: “I wish I could go back to America with you guys.”

This little girl affected Katy in a way she couldn’t even describe. It showed her how little the people in Honduras have.

The fact that the people there don’t have a lot of earthly possessions, yet they still enjoy helping others and showing kindness and compassion stood out to Katy. She realized that we often take what we have for granted and we rarely serve others. She learned that she doesn’t need possessions to live a full life because helping others and spreading God’s love brings her joy.

Now, Katy says she realizes “God is there for me a lot more now.” Before, her trip she didn’t realize how blessed she was and how much God provided for her, but now she realizes that God is by her side. She also says, “my trip taught me to be a lot more loving and caring towards everyone.”

Now, Katy realizes that she often takes her life, and God’s presence in it, for granted. This mission trip has caused her to realize that loving and caring for others is important, and it brings more joy to her than any possession could.

She no longer takes God’s love for granted because if people with so little can find joy in loving and serving, she knows she can, too.
